The 68 year old Clarence Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park, was an unusual project to say the least. It's renovation took place in 1994-1995. The fountain's 5 segmented, 27 foot solid marble bowl serves as a pool to catch water that spews 100,000 gallons per minute. Over the years, moisture seeped inside the fountain's foundation. Freezing and thawing only aggravated the damage. Dave Pate & Sons commitment entitled shoring up the 200-ton basin for 6 months while numerous sub-contractors dismantled the lower and intermediate basins, cap stones, consoles, pilasters and granite columns to get to the inner core of the fountain's walls to refurbish it's pumps and motors.

Column underpinning:Chicago, Illinois - To underpin and raise 2 interior, 4-story wood columns 4 50-ton, 6-inch diameter steel pipe piles were implemented. Heavy channel irons were "through-bolted" in the 2 columns at the crawl space and first floor to include the wood corbel and beams. 50-ton hydraulic rams were then placed on all 4 sides, raising the 2 columns and 4 floors 4 to 5 inches to a compromised level and secured.
